What Are Dental Exams and Cleanings?

In order to keep your smile beautiful, healthy, and bright, our team at Dlight Dental recommends getting dental exams and cleanings twice per year. A dental exam is a thorough assessment of the teeth, gums, jaw, and tongue to identify and treat any underlying oral health issues that may be impacting your general well-being, such as tooth decay or oral cancer. A dental cleaning utilizes professional-grade tools to remove built-up tartar on the teeth and prevent gum disease. We will also provide tips on how to improve your at-home oral hygiene. To schedule your routine dental exam and cleaning, which are typically performed during the same appointment, call our office in Rockville, MD or Washington, D.C.

Who is a Candidate for Dental Exams and Cleanings?

Everyone is a candidate for dental exams and cleanings! People of all ages, backgrounds, and oral health conditions can benefit from these appointments. Children are especially encouraged to come in for regular check-ups as they need to establish good oral health habits at a young age. Additionally, individuals with pre-existing dental issues should prioritize routine care. This includes adults with gum disease or other conditions that require frequent monitoring and maintenance. At Dlight Dental, we welcome all patients and look forward to helping you achieve a beautiful and healthy smile.

What Can I Expect from Dental Exams and Cleanings?

Annual exams at our Washington, D.C. and Rockville, MD facilities start off with an overview of your dental history. We may also speak with you about any oral or cosmetic concerns you have so we can properly address them. During particular yearly check-ins, a set of advanced x-rays might be ordered to provide us with greater insight into the wellness of your teeth and oral bone structures. A professional cleaning usually follows the dental exam. To start your cleaning, we will use an ultrasonic device to break down the bigger pieces of tartar and plaque from your teeth. Afterward, a handheld instrument, such as a scaler or curette, will remove the tinier pieces. Once the teeth are clean, they will be carefully polished to strengthen the enamel and remove stains. If requested, a fluoride treatment may be completed as well.

What to Expect After Dental Exams and Cleanings

Following your appointment at Dlight Dental, our team will provide helpful tips on how to maintain good oral hygiene at home. This may include recommendations for specific oral care products or techniques. We also schedule routine follow-up appointments to ensure the continued health of your smile. Additionally, if any oral health issues are identified during your examination, we can develop a treatment plan that meets your needs. Our goal is to help you achieve optimal oral health and maintain it for years to come.

This is my 5th dental practice in my lifetime and I love this dental practice the most. They have some convenient locations for me. I work in DC and live in Rockville. I have never had a problem going to either office. I have been with the for multiple years now and I have had a decent amount of work done. The dentists are professional and all procedures I have had done besides cleaning have been pretty painless. Importantly their office knows how to do insurance billing more than any other offices. I have two insurances and I have neve had a problem with that either. I just had a new crown done and after I shared to the Rockville office how much I love this practice.

My experience was great! I requested for an appointment the day before and I found a slot for general check-up and cleaning. I was then told that I need two fillings and I requested to have it then and there so I won't have to go back. They kindly adjusted their availability to accommodate me. They also already scheduled my next appointment, so it is on my calendar before I left the clinic. I appreciate it so much. Thank you! :)

Dr. Valle-Cintron is an excellent dentist. He takes the time to explain every procedure he does. He also does the cleanings himself. Little to no wait time and staff is very friendly. I am currently doing Invisalign and will be a loyal patient from now on. He is a professional and I would recommend Dr. Valle-Cintron to everyone. He is the best dentist I have ever had. He also speaks Spanish.

My experience at Dlight Dental was fantastic from start to finish. The dentist was friendly and conversational, and he took the time to do the cleaning himself. The staff is friendly, energetic, helpful and quick to see me. I don’t remember ever waiting to see the doctor, which is especially appreciated when fitting a dentist visit into a busy schedule.

HS Office Visit

By far the best dental experience I have ever had. I had a lot of work done here - extraction, implant, cleaning, fillings etc. and for someone who is usually afraid of the dentist they made me comfortable throughout the year. I recommended this place to a close friend and he had the same experience. I had to move out of state otherwise this would be my dental office for life. I’m very lucky to have come across the people at this office. If I could give this place 100 stars I would.

About Us
Are dental exams and cleanings covered by insurance?

Dental exams and cleanings are preventive treatments, so they are typically covered by dental insurance. Our office will talk to your insurance company to understand your coverage before we calculate any out-of-pocket amount. If you do not have insurance, please talk to our team about different payments we take and medical financing.

What is the difference between a dental cleaning and a dental exam?

In a dental cleaning, our staff will scrape plaque and tartar off of your teeth in order to keep them healthy. On the other hand, in a dental exam, they will be analyzing your teeth, gums, and throat in order to diagnose any issues. This could be anything from a cavity or gum disease to signs of oral cancer.
