What Is Root Canal Therapy?

Chipped or deteriorating teeth are often addressed utilizing a tooth-colored filling or a different type of restoration if they are discovered and dealt with in a timely manner. However, when the bacteria extends to the core of the tooth (also called the pulp), root canal therapy is sometimes needed to restore dental function and prevent the tooth from needing to be removed. A root canal is an endodontic therapy performed at Dlight Dental to remove contaminated inner tooth tissue and strengthen the affected tooth to improve dental health. If you have a significantly decayed or infected tooth, contact our Rockville, MD or Washington, D.C. office to discover the perks of root canal therapy.

What Are the Benefits of Root Canal Therapy?

Root canal therapy is a dental procedure designed to save a severely damaged tooth from extraction by removing infected pulp. This effective treatment offers relief from pain and preserves the natural tooth structure, promoting long-term oral health.

  • Relieves severe toothache and discomfort
  • Saves natural teeth, avoiding extraction
  • Prevents the spread of infection to surrounding tissues
  • Restores tooth function and chewing ability
  • Maintains a natural and aesthetically pleasing smile

What Is the Root Canal Process?

At our Rockville, MD and Washington, D.C. offices, root canals are carried out using local anesthesia that is typically paired with additional sedation methods to boost your comfort throughout the procedure. Once the tooth has lost feeling, a cover is placed to shield your other mouth structures. The diseased region will then be exposed via a small hole made in the upper part of the tooth. The pulp, which consists of the neural tissue and blood storage for every tooth, will be taken out and the region will be reshaped using professional endodontic tools prior to being fully cleaned. A board-certified specialist from our team can then seal the affected tooth and finish it off with a sedative filling to kick off the recovery process.

Who is a Candidate for Root Canal Therapy?

Patients with a severely decayed or infected tooth may be candidates for root canal therapy. The procedure is recommended for individuals who experience severe tooth pain, sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures, swollen gums, and discoloration of the affected tooth. During a consultation, our skilled dentists at Dlight Dental will perform a thorough evaluation to determine if root canal therapy is the best treatment option for your specific needs. We may also take X-rays to assess the extent of the damage and plan for an effective treatment.

What to Expect After Root Canal Therapy

After the root canal procedure, patients may experience some mild discomfort and sensitivity in the treated tooth. This can be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers and should subside within a few days. It is important to follow any post-procedure instructions provided by our dentists at Dlight Dental to ensure proper healing. Practicing good oral hygiene and attending regular check-ups will also help maintain the health of the treated tooth. We may recommend a custom dental crown to protect and strengthen the tooth after root canal therapy, depending on the extent of the damage involved.

Dr. Desta was great. Took a little extra time to get the root canal done because the tooth was so far back, but he gave me breaks to stretch part way through which was really considerate.

Friendly, knowledgeable, comforting, and responsive. Office is very clean and masking protocols are observed consistently. Updating to add: Dlight has been wonderful during the major dental work I have needed over the past months. I had very little discomfort even after a root canal. The staff are extremely knowledgeable, meticulous, professional, and genuinely nice people. If you have to have work done, I can't think of a better atmosphere.

With few dental issues in the last twenty years. I keep good home hygiene, but skipped dental appointments since last Feb dental visit for fear of covid. Two months ago, I went in for cleaning and X-ray, my dentist told me I need to see endodontist for I had severe teeth infection. Another dentist said I need to see periodontist. So I went to see a periodontist who wanted to do multiple surgeries. It was quite scaring, so I decided to see a dentist I trust 85 minutes away. After two visits, this dentist told me I need to see both endo and peri, but peri first. I went to see Dr. Li - a periodontist at Delight, Dr. Li took her time to explain my dental issues in a way that make sense and clear that I feel I am in good hand. She recommended an endodontist upstairs that I need to go first, and said I can see her afterwards if I want her to evaluate my periodontitis issues. Within a week, I had my root canal done by Dr. Chan, my crown done by dr. Jung at Delight and Dr. Li extracted one tooth that can not be saved, and bone graft - all under one roof. I feel very relieved to find Delight Dental that offer comprehensive professional dental services with top quality, their caring for the patients, the honest and objective advice their doctors provided, the friendly and warm staffs at front desk who work very hard to fill me in to get sooner treatments and ease my worries, and the dental assistant who kindly hold down my shoulder to help me relax during the procedure.

This relationship didn't start out based on the best of news but Dlight Dental was able to turn things around positively. One of my bottom right molars started aching and causing some pain and discomfort on a Saturday. I couldn't make an appointment to see my regular dentist until Tuesday. The diagnosis? It was abscessed. This dentist didn't do root canals, but I could come back to him for the crown. The endodontist that he recommended and the price he estimated for both his work and the specialist's work were way beyond my budget. I started calling other practices for price quotes. Luckily, I found Dlight Dental. Once they knew that I was in pain, Dlight Dental was able to fit me in for an appointment on the very day that I called them. Dr. Desta is very friendly, competent, and professional. He has a wonderful bedside manner. This was my very first root canal. The term was pretty scary and can induce a lot of anxiety and stress. While not completely pain-free (minimal), Dr. Desta made the whole procedure in two office visits as pleasant as possible. I literally got out of the dentist chair thinking, "That wasn't so bad. I wonder what all the fuss about what an ordeal it is is all about?" after that first appointment. Dr. Desta even called me back on a Sunday evening when I left an emergency voicemail stating that my temporary crown had come loose and was missing. The front office staff are also pleasant to deal with. There were no hidden charges; the price that was quoted was honored as the price that I paid. Everyone in the office from reception to dental assistants is always courteous. I can't wait to see Dr. Desta and team in six months for my regular cleaning!
